I’m shocked that Dave doesn’t have his hood on, leaning his head out the car window like a real dog. He’s that excited.
“I’ve never been to Pride,” Dave says, squirming in his seat. How he has this much energy this early in the morning is beyond me. We had to get up at the butt-crack of dawn in order to get to Denver and find our group in the parade lineup in time.
When the Denver PAH asked if we wanted to join them in the parade, I thought Dave was going to piss himself, he was so excited. We’ve gone to a couple of training classes and become members, but when they invited us to march, I think it was a pretty defining moment for him. He didn’t even have to say a word. His body language screamed “I finally belong” for him.
“I’ve never been to a Pride either, although I’ve been tempted to go home under the guise of a visit, just because I know DC has an incredible one.”
“You’re from DC? How did I not know that?” He wrinkles his nose, like it’s the worst possible place I could have chosen to be from, as if it were actually a choice.
“Maryland, but close enough. Don’t worry, my family isn’t there for political reasons,” I say, figuring that his aversion to politics, given what he’s shared with me about his dad, is the reason for his distaste. “My parents both work for the National Institute of Health.”
“Ah, you’re descended from super-geniuses. It’s all coming together,” he says with a sage wink.
I laugh and reach across the console to pinch his thigh, which earns me a playful slap.
“Nah, I think my older brother got all the genius genes. Westley and I got three generations’ worth of leftover slacker genes.”
“You are not a slacker. And you have an older brother too? I’m learning so much this morning.”
“He’s older by about twelve minutes. He’s my twin.”
Dave gasps and clutches his chest.
“You mean all this time, I could have been the filling of an Arthur-Arthur-clone sandwich and you’ve been holding out on me? Holy hot twin, Batman.”
“You did not just say that.”
“Pretty sure I did.”
As we get closer to Denver, Dave’s leg starts to bounce in place and I put a hand over it to stop it.
“Sorry,” he says sheepishly. “I’m excited.”
I grab his hand and bring it to my lips for a kiss, since I can’t do what I really want and give him a proper kiss.
“I know. I’m excited too. Tired, but excited.”
I find a spot in a paid lot, and Dave waits in the car while I feed the machine. There’s a long line, but everyone’s in great spirits and in festive colors, so I know we’re there for the same reason.
Back at the car, I pop the trunk and help Dave turn into Blue. He’s been fretting over his outfit for weeks now, but I love it. And I know he loves it too, he’s just self-conscious. Hopefully, today will go a long way toward building his confidence.
